Daily Morning Prayer for Tuesday, December 21 (Feast of St. Thomas)

Most of us remember the story of Thomas declining to believe that Jesus had risen unless he touched Jesus’s wounds. He is also mentioned in John 11: 16 as stating, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” This was in response to Jesus telling his disciples they are going to Judea, the disciples thought Jesus would be stoned to death if he went there. At the Last Supper, Thomas asked the question, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” to Jesus’s statement, “You know the way to the place where I am going.” Some say Thomas went to areas of present-day Iran or India to preach and convert Christians. He died December 21 in 72 CE when he was stabbed by a spear.

The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Let us confess our sins to God.

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,

An Order of Worship for the Longest Night

In our communities, there are always people feeling the length of the night. On the longest night of the year, we pause with intention to acknowledge those for whom grief, loss, fear, homelessness or any other of the changes and chances of this life make the nights feel longer. We welcome Christ as our Light so that we, in turn, can be a light to those who are struggling. As we pray and light candles, we draw into our hearts and minds all those in need of love and care on this night.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light
around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O
Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to
you are both alike. Psalm 139:10-11

Opening Sentences:

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us.
To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and
to guide our feet into the way of peace.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139:10-11

John 1:1-5; 9-14 (translation: The Message)

The Word was first,
    the Word present to God,
    God present to the Word.
The Word was God,
    in readiness for God from day one.

Everything was created through God;
    nothing—not one thing!—
    came into being without God.
What came into existence was Life,
    and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
    the darkness couldn’t put it out.

The Life-Light was the real thing:
    Every person entering Life

Luke 1:1-25

Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.

In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years.

Once when he was serving as priest before God and his section was on duty, he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense. Now at the time of the incense-offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’ Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.’ The angel replied, ‘I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and wondered at his delay in the sanctuary. Juan de la Cruz/St. John of the Cross (1542-91) is best known as the author of The Dark Night of the Soul. Interestingly, he never used that title or phrase. John does speak of the dark night of the spirit, referring to melancholy or world -weariness or even monastic torpor.

Following his father’s death, he was raised in an orphanage. He enrolled in a Jesuit college at 21, joined the Carmelite Friers and was ordained. John became aquatinted with Teresa of Avila and adopted her beliefs that a stricter rule among the members of the Order were needed.

In 1577 John was kidnapped by members of the order opposed to this change and when he refused to renounce his reform, he was imprisioned in complete darkness and solitude in a Calced monastery in Toledo. This is where he began to compose some of the poetry he is known for today.

HIs poem The Dark Night of the Soul is about his experience of spiritual desolation or feeling abandoned and rejected by God and why this is for some Christians a means by which God increases our faith in Him. (Satucket)

St. John of the Cross is not easy to read; but when we read the poetry, the sayings and the few letters we possess, we sense almost intuitively that we are hearing someone who transmits to us profound spiritual experience that is shaped by the Word made flesh, the self-emptying of Christ on the cross and his exaltation in resurrection. John of the Cross, a busy man in his day with serving, teaching, and traveling to spread the word of God (reportedly walking over 18,000 miles),was imprisioned yet again for his moderate views, denounced as a traitor and died in a friary in Ubeda, Spain December 14, 1591.

Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height and look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One. Baruch 5:5
