Let us confess our sins to God.

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.

Commemorating the life of Yona Kanamuzeyi
Rwandan Deacon and Martyr killed January 23, 1964

Yona Kanamuzeyi, a deacon of the Anglican Church, was born of a Hutu-Tutsi marriage and during the civil war in Rwanda-Burundi, he provided a home on his mission at Nyamata for refugees fleeing ethnic violence. His activities became suspect to the authorities when he refused to take sides in the conflict, earning him the label “Tutsi Sympathizer”. As Kanamuzeyi and two others were being led to the river where he would be shot he sang the hymn “There Is a Happy Land”. The hymn can be heard here. He asked permission to write in his journal before his execution, and he wrote, “We are going to Heaven.” He requested that the journal to be given to his wife, and she did eventually receive it. His executioners were so amazed by his singing that they released the other two captives.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear, *
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation *
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God *
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, 
    creator of heaven and earth; 
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. 
    He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit 
        and born of the Virgin Mary. 
    He suffered under Pontius Pilate, 
        was crucified, died, and was buried.

O God of Peace: Grant that we may become true “peacemakers” through searching to preserve inner peace, which will govern our minds and our actions so that the love of Christ may be seen in us no matter what we may suffer at the hands of the world. We ask for this inner peace, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Intercessions

We pause now to offer our intercessions and prayers to the Lord, silently or aloud, ending with,

Gracious God, hear our prayers as you have heard the prayers of generations before us. Help us to trust in you, to follow you, and to give glory to you in all circumstances. In your Son’s holy name we pray, Amen.

In Thanksgiving for a faithful God in times of trial and in times of joy, we join our voices responsively in the hymn sung by Yona Kanamuzeyi:

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
