Compline for the week of August 13, 2023

with elements of The Ita Compline from Celtic Daily Prayer, Book One

Ita was abbess of a women’s religious community at Killeedy, County Limerick, in Ireland until her death around 570. She also ran a boys’ school and this compline service of the Northumbria community honors her teachings about praying for and loving each soul who crosses our paths.

Grace of the love of the skies be thine,
Grace of the love of the stars be thine,
Grace of the love of the moon be thine,
Grace of the love of the sun be thine.

When I see the new moon,
It becomes me to lift mine eye,
It becomes me to bend my knee,
It becomes me to bow my head.

(Poetry excerpts from The Carmina Gadelica
included in J.P. Newell’s book Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul)

Search me, O God, and know my heart.
Test me and know my thoughts.

See if there is any wicked in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.

Let us confess our sins to God.

O Father, O Son, O Holy Spirit,
Forgive us our sins.
O only-begotten Son of the heavenly Father, forgive.
O God who is one,
O God who is true,
O God who is first,
O God who is one of substance,
O God only mighty,
In three Persons, truly merciful,
Forgive us.

May the Almighty God grant us forgiveness of all our sins, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God of life, this night, o darken not to us Thy light.
O God of life, this night, close not Thy gladness to our sight.
Keep Your people, Lord, in the arms of Your embrace. Shelter us under Your wings.

Be our light in darkness.
Be our hope in distress.
Be our calm in anxiety.
Be our strength in weakness.
Be our comfort in pain.
Be our song in the night.

Psalm 31: 1-5

In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame; *

deliver me in your righteousness.
Incline your ear to me; *

make haste to deliver me.
Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold; *

for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.
Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *

for you are my tower of strength.
Into your hands I commend my spirit, *

for you have redeemed me,
O Lord, O God of truth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Hebrews 13:20-21

Thanks be to God.

V. Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit;
R. For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.
V. Keep us, O Lord, as the apple of your eye;
R. Hide us under the shadow of your wings.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Lord, hear our prayer.
And let our cry come to you.
Let us pray.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, and illumine this night with your celestial brightness; that by night as by day your people may glorify your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live: Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other’s toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We now name our intercessions on behalf of ourselves and the world.

In peace we may lie down, for it is in You, O Lord, that we find refuge from our sorrows and a source for our joys. You alone make us to rest secure. Amen.

Be the peace of the Spirit mine this night.
Be the peace of the Son mine this night.
Be the peace of the Father mine this night.
The peace of all peace be mine this night.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us. Amen.
