Join St. Phoebe School at 8 p.m. ET Sunday-Thursday to pray Compline: Zoom Link for Compline

The Gathering (A Disciple’s Prayer Book)

Creator, we give you thanks for all you are and all you bring to us for our visit within your creation. In Jesus, you place the Gospel in the center of this sacred circle through which all of creation is related. You show us the way to live a generous and compassionate life. Give us your strength to live together with respect and commitment as we grow in your spirit, for you are God, now and forever. Amen.

(From Love and Forgiveness: Daily Prayers for All Seasons p.147)

Opening:

What we offer is enough
God’s love covers all.

Our help is in the Name of the Lord;
The maker of heaven and earth.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Prayer:

Creator and lover of our souls: teach us to release our burdens and accept your love. May your love be the deepest reality of our lives and may we offer real love to others. Amen

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Praise:

A Song of God’s Love (1 John 4:7-11

Beloved, let us love one another, *
for love is of God.

Whoever does not love does not know God *
for God is love.

In this, the love of God was revealed among us, *
that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through Jeus Christ.

In this is love, no that we loved God but that God loved us*
and sent his Son that sins might be forgiven.

Beloved, since God loved us so much, *
we also ought to love one another.

For if we love one another, God abides in us, *
And God’s love will be perfected in us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Scripture:

1 John 3:19-20

Little children, les us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. By this we will know we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything.

Thanks be to God.

Meditation:

Where there is no love, put love, and you will draw love out.             — –St. John of the Cross

Where have you neglected to put love? Where do you need to ask that love be drawn of us?

V. Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit;
R. For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.
V. Keep us, O Lord, as the apple of your eye;
R. Hide us under the shadow of your wings.

Confession:

Most loving God,
We confess that we have not loved in thought, word, or deed.
We have loved you or our neighbors or ourselves.
We are sorry.
Remind us that your love us unconditionally
and helps us to rest in your love.
Have mercy on us, forgive us for forgetting to love,
and renew our ability to give and receive love
in all that we do.
Amen.

We offer now our prayers and intercessions silently or aloud.

Creator God, you call us to love and serve you with body, mind and spirit through loving your creation and our sisters and brothers. Open our hearts in compassion and receive these petitions on behalf of the needs of the church and the world. Make us faithful instruments of your peace. May we fill our world with your love. Amen

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Let us pray:

Our Father in heaven,
     hallowed be your Name,
     your kingdom come,
     your will be done,
         on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
     as we forgive those
         who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
     and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
     and the glory are yours,
     now and for ever. Amen.

Lord, make me and instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled but as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

–Prayer of St. Francis of Assissi

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake
we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

Let us bless the Lord
Thanks be to God, Alleluia

The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
bless us and keep us. Amen.
