On this Holy Day we commemorate the visit that Mary made to her relative Elizabeth as recounted in the Gospel of Luke. Mary set off on this trip shortly after learning from the angel Gabriel of God’s plan that she would bear Jesus. Gabriel had also informed her of Elizabeth’s miraculous pregnancy, which occurred despite her advanced age; Elizabeth’s son would be John the Baptist. As Mary and Elizabeth greeted each other, Mary gave voice to their mutual joy with her soaring hymn, the Magnificat, praising God for his great goodness in caring for the poor. The Magnificat remains an important element of worship in the church, often included as a canticle in Morning and Evening Prayer, and it has inspired countless musical settings. The complementary Canticle of Zechariah is the hymn of praise of the man who was Elizabeth’s husband and the father of John.

Prayer

God of steadfast love: Turn our hearts to you, that we may once again delight in your goodness and rejoice in the good news of the risen Christ; in whose name we pray. Amen.

Praise:

Psalm 118:19-24

Open for me the gates of righteousness;*
I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the Lord.

“This is the gate of the Lord;*
the righteous shall enter through it.”

I will give thanks to you, for you answered me*
and have become my salvation.

The same stone that the builders rejected *
has become the chief cornerstone.

This is the Lord’s doing,*

A monk, scholar, and teacher, the Venerable Bede (ca. 672-735) was an intellectual powerhouse who authored theological texts and a renowned history of early England. He was sent as a child to be educated at the twinned monasteries of St. Peter and St. Paul in what was then the Kingdom of Northumbria. He remained there, surviving a plague, and was ordained first a deacon (at around 19, below the canonically-mandated age) and then a priest. Bede’s most prominent work is his Ecclesiastical History of the
English People, which continues to impress scholars with its synthesis of oral history and documentary details regarding church life of the preceding centuries. Bede’s theological writings include sermons, exegetical commentaries, and investigations into time-keeping. The latter discussed how to calculate the date of Easter, his observations of the link between the moon and tides, and his efforts to popularize the use of “anno domini” (A.D.) to standardize how dates are rendered. Bede had just completed an
English-language translation of the Gospel of John at the time of his death. He was deemed “venerable” at church councils about a century later, and in around 1020 his remains were moved from his monastery to Durham Cathedral.
