O God, your Spirit of Wisdom was present at the creation and with Jesus at his baptism: Open our hearts to that same Spirit, and strengthen and guide
us to love and serve you and our neighbors; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Praise: A Song of the Spirit of Wisdom (Wisdom 7:7-8, 10-14a)

I prayed and understanding was given me; *
I called on God and the Spirit of Wisdom came to me.

I preferred her to scepters and thrones, *
and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her.

I loved her more than health or beauty, *
and I chose to have her rather than light
because her radiance never ceases.

In her company, all good things came to me; *
in her hands, a wealth of true riches.

We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. But anyone with whom you find your gods shall not live. In the presence of our kinsfolk, point out what I have that is yours, and take it.’ Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two maids, but he did not find them. And he went out of Leah’s tent, and entered Rachel’s. Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. Laban felt all about in the tent, but did not find them. And she said to her father, ‘Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for the way of women is upon me.’ So he searched, but did not find the household gods.

Then Jacob became angry, and upbraided Laban. Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is my offence? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me? Although you have felt about through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my kinsfolk and your kinsfolk, so that they may decide between us two. That which was torn by wild beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself; of my hand you required it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father’s household gods. And Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee. So he fled with all that he had; starting out he crossed the Euphrates, and set his face towards the hill country of Gilead.

On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled. So he took his kinsfolk with him and pursued him for seven days until he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream by night, and said to him, ‘Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Cyril and Methodius were Greek brothers and missionaries of the 9th century who are known as the “Missionaries to the Slavs” for their role spreading the Gospel in central and eastern Europe. Along with the faith they also brought literacy. They devised an alphabet—the precursor to today’s Cyrillic, named in Cyril’s honor—which they used to translate portions of Scripture into the vernacular and to create a Slavic liturgy. In iconography, Cyril is depicted with a scroll that displays the alphabet while Methodius, a bishop, holds the Gospels and a staff with the Orthodox cross. The brothers are revered in the eastern Orthodox church and have also been canonized in the Roman Catholic Church.

Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to
the ends of the world. Psalm 19:4

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,

Philippians 1:15–26

Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that by my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death.
