Commemoration of Vincent De Paul, Priest 1660 and

Louise De Marillac, Vowed Religious 1660

Vincent De Paul was French Catholic Priest, born to peasant farmers in 1581, who dedicated his life to serving the poor. In 1622 he was appointed chaplain to the galleys and worked with the imprisoned galley slaves in Paris. He then went on to found and become Superior of the Congregation of the Mission, a Roman Catholic society of apostolic life for men. This group was dedicated to vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and stability and they devoted themselves to helping people in small villages and towns. Vincent De Paul was also devoted to retreats for clergy, believed in the importance of seminary education, and was known everywhere for his compassion. There is also an interesting mystery around his life in the years 1605-07 in which he claims to have been captured by pirates and held as a slave, but there is some doubt as to whether this actually happened.

Louise De Marillac was born into a wealthy family in Paris in 1591.  She wanted to join the religious of Poor Clares but a health condition prevented her from joining.  She married and had a son, but was widowed by 1625. Vincent De Paul was already her spiritual guide and he encouraged her to do charitable works, so she began to provide spiritual direction for young girls and taught them skills for feeding, nursing, and caring for the needy as well.

In 1633 Vincent De Paul founded the Daughters of Charity and made Louise their Superior. The Daughters weren’t cloistered nor were they called nuns, so they were unique and considered somewhat radical for the 17th century Catholic church in France. While Vincent De Paul was known for encouraging the formation of Ladies of Charity groups around Paris, these women did not engage in the actual work. The first daughters of Charity were women from lower incomes who wanted to work with the Ladies, particularly in anything concerning serving the poor. They were known for nursing the poor in their homes, educating poor children, and eventually even running hospitals. They have been known as “Angels of the Battlefield” due to their activity as nurses in wartime in many places.

Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are safe!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralysed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’ The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Stand up, take your mat and walk.’ At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.

Now that day was a sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.’ But he answered them, ‘The man who made me well said to me, “Take up your mat and walk.” ’ They asked him, ‘Who is the man who said to you, “Take it up and walk”?’ Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, ‘See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.’ The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath. But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is still working, and I also am working.’ For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.

So he asked them the hour when he began to recover, and they said to him, ‘Yesterday at one in the afternoon the fever left him.’ The father realized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him, ‘Your son will live.’ So he himself believed, along with his whole household. Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I have ever done.’ So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there for two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world.’

After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and they remained there for a few days.

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people *

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
