Isaiah 61:1-9

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

St. Josephine Bakhita

Monastic, 1869 – 1947

Josephone Bakhita was born in 1869 in the Darfur region of southern Sudan. She was kidnapped at age 7, sold into slavery, and given the name Bakhita, which means fortune. She was resold several times and suffered brutal beatings and was even branded. Ultimately ending up in the household of Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Sudan, who took her to Italy and gave her to a friend. She became the babysitter for the friend’s daughter and accompanied the child to school run by Canossian Catholic nuns. In 1890 she was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church and took the name Josephine. When the family wanted to return to Africa, she refused and the Italian government actually declared her free, as slavery was illegal in Italy. She entered training with the nuns and made her profession of vows in 1896. Bakhita was a nun for about 45 years, dying in 1947. She was canonized in 2000 and is the patron saint of Sudan and human trafficking survivors. In iconography Josephine Bakhita is depicted with hands in a prayer position which is typical of virgin saints and she also wears the chains of slavery—but broken, both spiritually and literally. Spiritually, the chains were broken with her conversion to the Christian Faith, and literally by her choice to serve God as a nun, thus exerting independence from her “owner” family.

Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to strike with a wicked fist.
Such fasting as you do today
will not make your voice heard on high.
Is such the fast that I choose,
a day to humble oneself?
Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush,
and to lie in sackcloth and ashes?
Will you call this a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?

Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself from your own kin?
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you,
the glory of the Lord shall be your rearguard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.

If you remove the yoke from among you,
the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,
if you offer your food to the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
then your light shall rise in the darkness
and your gloom be like the noonday.
The Lord will guide you continually,

John said to him, ‘Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.’ But Jesus said, ‘Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

When he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ He said to them, ‘This kind can come out only through prayer.’
