Commemoration of Charlotte Digges “Lottie” Moon (1840-1912) Baptist Missionary to China, Teacher, Evangelist

Lottie Moon was born in Albemarle County, Virginia to a wealthy family.  She was well educated, and in 1861,  received one of the first Master of Arts degrees awarded to a woman by a southern institution. In 1873 the Foreign Mission Board of the Baptist Church officially appointed her as a missionary to China. She began her ministry teaching at a girls’ school, but after going out into the country with the wives of the missionaries, she realized that she felt called to evangelism. Most missionary work was done by married men at the time, but the wives and Lottie discovered that the only way to reach Chinese women was by having a woman visit with them.

Lottie first thought of the Chinese as inferior, but quickly came to love their culture and the people. She came to learn that the more she adopted Chinese customs and showed her respect for Chinese culture, the more she was able to gain trust and opportunity to share the Gospel.

Lottie Moon personifies the missionary spirit and the Southern Baptist churches collect an annual Lottie Moon Christmas offering which has raised well over a billion dollars for missions since 1888. This fund finances half of the Southern Baptist missionary budget annually.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah,

The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth;
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” ’

John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’

We name our prayers and intercessions, silently or aloud concluding with:

O God of Isaiah and John the Baptist,
through all such faithful ones
you proclaim the unfolding of future joy
and renewed life.
Strengthen our hearts to believe your advent promise
that one day we will walk in the holy way of Christ,
where sorrow and sighing will be no more
and the journey of God’s people will be joy. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom:

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
