Opening:

Know the grace of God
and live joyfully this day of salvation.

Prayer

God of heaven and earth, your wisdom stretches
around the world, ordering all things for good:
Free us from anxiety and understand us like a friend,
that we might share the good news of your friendship
with all people; through the Word made flesh,
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Praise

Come, heavenly comforter and spirit of truth,
Blowing everywhere and filling all things.
Treasury of blessings and giver of life:
Come and abide in us;
cleanse us from every impurity,
and, in your great goodness, save us.

Scripture

Ephesians 3:14-21

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Meditation

We can all please God. We must only choose well. Many go abroad to study,
pursuing knowledge far from home, but the kingdom of God is always here and now,wherever you are, within you. Precisely because the kingdom is within, and God is our friend, our salvation only requires that we be willing. –Athanasius of Alexandria

St. Cyril (ca. 315 – ca. 386) was a theologian and bishop of Jerusalem at the time of the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Jesus. Cyril struggled with Arian rivals who exiled him from Jerusalem multiple times. Although accused of being Arian himself, Cyril was ultimately vindicated. In 381 he participated in the Council of Constantinople that formally promulgated the Nicene Creed declaring Jesus to be “of one being with the Father,” thus definitively triumphing over Arianism. Little is known of Cyril’s early life. A native of Jerusalem, he served as a deacon for about a decade before his ordination to the priesthood. Cyril authored 23 Catecheses to instruct catechumens and the newly baptized; the works remain of interest today for their unique insight into the theology and rituals of 4th-century Christianity. Cyril is honored as a Doctor of the Church and also is revered in Eastern Orthodoxy

Feast Day of Saint Patrick

Bishop and Missionary of Ireland, 461

Saint Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and Bishop in Ireland. When he was sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland where he worked for 6 years as a shepherd.  It was during this time that he came to know God, who told him to flee to the shore where he could escape on a boat. He became a priest upon returning home in the footsteps of his father, who was a deacon, and his grandfather, who was a priest in the Christian church. He later returned to Ireland where he is believed to have converted thousands to Christianity. St. Patrick’s efforts were eventually turned into an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland, despite the fact that snakes were not known to inhabit the region.

Genesis 40:1-23

Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord the king of Egypt. Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined. The captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he waited on them; and they continued for some time in custody. One night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own meaning. Please tell them to me.’

So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, ‘In my dream there was a vine before me, and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms came out and the clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.’ Then Joseph said to him, ‘This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days; within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you shall place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. But remember me when it is well with you; please do me the kindness to make mention of me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this place. For in fact I was stolen out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should have put me into the dungeon.’

When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favourable, he said to Joseph, ‘I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head, and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head.’ And Joseph answered, ‘This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days; within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head—from you!—and hang you on a pole; and the birds will eat the flesh from you.’

On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. He restored the chief cupbearer to his cupbearing, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand; but the chief baker he hanged, just as Joseph had interpreted to them. Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways *
and the evil ones their thoughts;

Mark 2:13-22

Jesus went out again beside the lake; the whole crowd gathered around him, and he taught them. As he was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.

And as he sat at dinner in Levi’s house, many tax-collectors and sinners were also sitting with Jesus and his disciples—for there were many who followed him. When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax-collectors, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does he eat with tax-collectors and sinners?’ When Jesus heard this, he said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’
Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, ‘Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?’ Jesus said to them, ‘The wedding-guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

‘No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.’

Splendor and honor and kingly power *

The Apostles’ Creed

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks

We bless you for our creation, preservation,

but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
