Morning Prayer for Advent (Daily Prayer for All Seasons)

As we begin the day, we focus on our calling to live faithfully, for who knows what today holds?

Opening

God’s bright glory will shine, and everyone will see it. Isaiah 40:5

Prayer

O Holy One, thank you for coming to us anew this day.
Prepare our hearts and reawaken our love for you as we discern your call within us.
May we join with you in making level the path for all people. Amen.

Praise

Scripture

Amos 5:18-24

Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord!
   Why do you want the day of the Lord?
It is darkness, not light;
   as if someone fled from a lion,
   and was met by a bear;
or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall,
   and was bitten by a snake.
Is not the day of the Lord darkness, not light,
   and gloom with no brightness in it?

I hate, I despise your festivals,
   and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
Even though you offer me your burnt-offerings and grain-offerings,
   I will not accept them;
and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals
   I will not look upon.
Take away from me the noise of your songs;
   I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
But let justice roll down like waters,
   and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Affirmation

We believe in God, Creator of all:
The two-legged, the four-legged, the winged ones,
and those that crawl upon the earth and swim in the waters.
We believe in God, One Who Walked with Us:
Our Brother Jesus born in humility,
who lived and died for us
and who will come again to bring us to glory.
We believe in God, Spirit with Us:
Ever present and ever guiding, upholding us
and showing us the principles to live by.
We hear God’s voice through the prophets.
Creator, One Who Walked with Us, Spirit with Us, Holy One:
We are named in the waters of baptism as your own,
all of us related, all of us your children.
We watch for signs of your homecoming
and thank you for this sacred circle of life. Amen.

In the beginning, it is dark, cool, and quiet, and we ask you:

Intercessions

We pray for those in formation with the St. Phoebe School; for those seeking and discerning; and for all deacons in their lives, work, and ministries bridging the Church and the world.

You are our Shepherd, and we need nothing more.
We rejoice in your presence with us in all of creation. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

Give us today our daily bread.

Prayer

Commemoration: St. Nicholas of Myra

About St. Nicholas:  Nicholas (d. AD 342) is known historically to have been a Bishop in the city of Myra in Lycia (part of modern Turkey) in the fourth century. He is associated with charitable giving in many countries around the world and is portrayed as the rescuer of sailors, the protector of children, and the friend of people in distress or need. Stories of St. Nicholas place him as a benefactor, as well as a stauch advocate of the Christian faith, which placed him in prison. Some accounts also place him at the Council of Nicea, heatedly advocating against Arius (and perhaps slapping him!). As a benefactor to those in need (especially children) and a defender of the Christian faith, St. Nicholas continues to be remembered and celebrated on his feast day around the world.

Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.    Isaiah 40:3

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our
own hearts,
we have offended against thy holy laws,
we have left undone those things which we ought to
have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to
have done.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent,
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesus our Lord;
and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and
remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of
life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

1 John 4:7-14

Amos 3:1-11

Does a lion roar in the forest,

Matthew 21:12-22

   but you are making it a den of robbers.’

The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he cured them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he did, and heard the children crying out in the temple, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David’, they became angry and said to him, ‘Do you hear what these are saying?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Yes; have you never read,
“Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies
   you have prepared praise for yourself”?’
He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

In the morning, when he returned to the city, he was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the side of the road, he went to it and found nothing at all on it but leaves. Then he said to it, ‘May no fruit ever come from you again!’ And the fig tree withered at once. When the disciples saw it, they were amazed, saying, ‘How did the fig tree wither at once?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea”, it will be done. Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.’

We seek the mighty God
in the most unlikely places
as a child in a stable,
and in an empty tomb.
May God hear these prayers,
which come from the unlikely corners of our lives.

Commemoration: Nicholas Ferrar, Deacon

Englishman Nicholas Ferrar (1592-1637) came from a wealthy family that was associated with the Virginia Company and had a Royal Charter for a plantation in the colony.  Ferrar attended Cambridge, traveled to continental Europe, and served as a member of Parliament as a young man.  In 1626 he was ordained a deacon and moved to the town of Little Gidding, where his family, friends, and servants constituted an informal religious community.  Under Ferrar’s direction, they faithfully prayed the Daily Office, recited the entire Psalter daily, and always had a member situated at prayer.  The group lived its faith by restoring and reviving the local church; writing about Christian faith and practice; and pursuing voluntary poverty, almsgiving, and social welfare projects.  Ferrar was a friend of Anglican priest and poet George Herbert and hosted King Charles I at Little Gidding several times.  Today, members of the Society of St. Nicholas Ferrar in the United States emulate his devotion to the Daily Office by committing to daily Morning and Evening Prayer and promoting the practice.  T.S. Eliot’s poem “Little Gidding” further commemorates Ferrar’s experience and community: “You are not here to verify, / Instruct yourself, or inform curiosity / Or carry report. You are here to kneel / Where prayer has been valid.”

O God, by whose grace your servant Nicholas Ferrar kindled with
the flame of your love, became a burning and a shining light in
your Church: Grant that we also may be aflame with the spirit
of love and discipline, and walk before you as children of light;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all
things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of
lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided
and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together
under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole
body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified:
Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before
you for all members of your holy Church, that in their
vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
