Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.

Juan de la Cruz/St. John of the Cross (1542-91) is best known as the author of The Dark Night of the Soul. Interestingly, he never used that title or phrase. John does speak of the dark night of the spirit, referring to melancholy or world -weariness or even monastic torpor.

Following his father’s death, he was raised in an orphanage. He enrolled in a Jesuit college at 21, joined the Carmelite Friers and was ordained. John became aquatinted with Teresa of Avila and adopted her beliefs that a stricter rule among the members of the Order were needed.

In 1577 John was kidnapped by members of the order opposed to this change and when he refused to renounce his reform, he was imprisioned in complete darkness and solitude in a Calced monastery in Toledo. This is where he began to compose some of the poetry he is known for today.

HIs poem The Dark Night of the Soul is about his experience of spiritual desolation or feeling abandoned and rejected by God and why this is for some Christians a means by which God increases our faith in Him. (Satucket)

St. John of the Cross is not easy to read; but when we read the poetry, the sayings and the few letters we possess, we sense almost intuitively that we are hearing someone who transmits to us profound spiritual experience that is shaped by the Word made flesh, the self-emptying of Christ on the cross and his exaltation in resurrection. John of the Cross, a busy man in his day with serving, teaching, and traveling to spread the word of God (reportedly walking over 18,000 miles),was imprisioned yet again for his moderate views, denounced as a traitor and died in a friary in Ubeda, Spain December 14, 1591.

Today we commemorate William West Skiles, Deacon

who was invited by Bishop Livi Sillimin Ives, Bishop of North Carolina, to go toValle Crucis in 1844 to serve as manager of the farm established at the Episcopal mission there and to teach agriculture. In 1847, Skiles was ordained deacon and also became one of the first Epsicopalians to enter monastic life in the Order of the Holy Cross, the first Anglican monastic order since the Reformation. While continuing his work at the mission station at Valle Crucis, Skiles also entered upon his duties as a deacon, occasionally reading the daily office in the chapel and carrying out mission work at the outlying stations in the Watauga Valley, reading prayers, catechizing and occasionally preaching. He undertook some medical training through reading books and was frequently called upon to provide medical care to the people of the surrounding valley and mountains. Beloved for his pastoral care and affectionately known as the “homely sage,” Skyles faithfully served the mountain people as doctor, legal advisor, counselor, mediator, schoolmaster, public scrivener, and evangelist until his death in 1862.
