I will give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be
my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our
own hearts,
we have offended against thy holy laws,
we have left undone those things which we ought to
have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to
have done.
But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
spare thou those who confess their faults,
restore thou those who are penitent,
according to thy promises declared unto mankind
in Christ Jesus our Lord;
and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and
remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of
life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord, open thou our lips.
And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Genesis 4:1-16

When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).

Let us confess our sins to God.

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Genesis 3:1-24

John 1:19-28

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ He said,
‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
“Make straight the way of the Lord” ’,
as the prophet Isaiah said.

Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Harriet Bedell

3/19/1875 — 1/8/1969

Harriet Bedell (1875-1969) was from Buffalo, NY where she was trained and working as a school teacher when an Episcopal missionary on leave from China spoke to her parish about the need for missionaries. Although she originally had her heart set on going to China, Harriet’s mother was not as excited about her daughter going overseas, and agreed for her to apply to Deaconess School instead. In 1906 she completed the one-year course at The New York Training School for Deaconesses, which provided training in religion, missions, teaching, hygiene, and nursing care, after which she was sent to be a missionary-teacher to the Cheyenne in Whirlwind Mission, Oklahoma in part, because of her teaching experience with children from the Seneca Nation from the nearby Cattaraugus reservation. She not only provided education for women and children, but tended the sick, organized access to social services, and covered liturgical duties when the rector was away.

In 1916 the Episcopal Bishop of Alaska requested her to consider a remote assignment, which began her time in Stevens Village, Alaska, a tiny village in north central Alaska just 40 miles from the Arctic Circle. In 1922 she was named a Deaconess in the Episcopal Church and her ministry was moved to Tanana so that she could start a boarding school there which had been funded by church members for children who couldn’t get to school during the long winter months. When money for the school began to run out, Harriet traveled back to New York in 1931 to ask for more funding. With the Great Depression, however, money was scarce and although the church paid the school’s debts, there was no money to continue her work in Alaska.

In 1933 at the age of 57, Harriet was invited to speak to a group in Miami, FL about her mission work in Alaska. During this trip she visited a Seminole Nation reservation and was determined to focus the rest of her life to improving their quality of life through better access to housing, education, and medical services as well as through reviving their basket and doll-making traditions so that they could preserve their traditions and become more self reliant economically.

Because her community was so spread throughout the Everglades, Harriet purchased a used Model A Ford Sedan for $298 and learned to drive it in a week. She drove all around the Everglades meeting the needs of people, but it is reported that she drove so slowly she often created traffic pile ups! She also poled dugout canoes through the swamps to minister and bring aid to those in need. She established the Glades Cross Mission where she provided education and medical services and also worked out a deal with the Collier Company (The company which brought the first telephone, railroad, newspapers, and bus company to the area and also constructed the Tamiami Trail through the Everglades, connecting the two coasts of Florida.) so that she could “pay” the Miccosukee and Seminole artisans for their handiwork and then pay them in tickets that could be used at the company stores.The handiwork was then displayed in the mission.

Although officially obliged to retire in 1943 at the age of 68, she reportedly said, “There is no retirement in the service of the Master.” She continued her work, playing a pivotal role in the Miccosukee and Seminole gaining tribal status and acquiring 200,000 acres of land for a school. She fought to maintain their land when the Everglades National Park opened in 1947, and continued in service to the native people until her church and all of her personal belongings were destroyed in 1960 by Hurricane Donna. After the storm she moved to Bishop Gray Inn, and Episcopal Retirement Home in Davenport, Florida where she cared for fellow residents until her death in 1969 at the age of 94.

John 6:15-27

When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, got into a boat, and started across the lake to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The lake became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land towards which they were going.

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the lake saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’

Meditation

You will know when it is time to bring to birth the new creation. The signs will be all around you, urging, insisting: Now is the time. You have to know just when to bear down and concentrate on one thing only. It takes labor, hard, hard labor to bring to birth something new.

Commemoration of The Holy Innocents

(blended English/Spanish)

The Feast of the Holy Innocents, or Childremas in Old English, commemorates the death of the male children in Bethlehem who were 2 years of age or under. King Herod the Great ordered the slaughter in order to ensure that the infant Messiah sought by the Magi would be unable to displace him on his throne. The young boys killed by Herod were innocent of any crime and are acknowledged as “holy” by the Church because of the holy circumstances of their death. They were martyred out of a hatred of Christ and the imagined crime of being potential threats to Herod’s power. One commentary states that though they did not know Christ, they died in his place so that he could go on to save the world, Jospeh having been warned in a dream to flee.

In 2016, Pope Francis acknowledged that “Christmas is also accompanied, whether we like it or not, by tears.” He pointed to St. Matthew quoting the prophet Jeremiah, when he describes Rachel weeping for her children. “It is the sobbing of mothers bewailing the death of their children in the face of Herod’s tyranny and unbridled thirst for power,” the pontiff related. This cry continues today, he added. “Today, too, we hear this heartrending cry of pain, which we neither desire nor are able to ignore or to silence,” he continued. “In our world — I write this with a heavy heart — we continue to hear the lamentation of so many mothers, of so many families, for the death of their children, their innocent children.”

On this day of remembering the holy innocents of Bethlehem we remember also the holy innocents of our day. Victims of war, climate drive famine and displacement, laborers whose work is valued so little their wages fail to meet their needs. We remember those who are separated from peace by hunger, illness, insufficient housing, or fear, and name those for whom we pray specifically either aloud or in our hearts:

Gracious God, you hear the cries of all creation. Protect us from harm and from unwittingly inflicting harm, so that we may be instruments of peace and love, bringing glory to you and comfort to your children everywhere, through your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
