William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) Du Bois. February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, historian, author, and editor. He was the first African-American gradate of Harvard University (PhD-History). Historian David Levering Lewis wrote, “In the course of his long, turbulent career, W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism— scholarship, propaganda, integration, national self-determination, human rights, cultural and economic separatism, politics, international communism, expatriation, third world solidarity.” He is an author, historian, sociologist and is noted for his historical and sociological scholarship on religion in the Black evangelical church tradition.

Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to
the ends of the world. Psalm 19:4

Let us confess our sins against God and one another.

Almighty God, Source of all that is,
Giver of every good gift:
You create all people in your image
and call us to love one another as you love us.
We confess that we have failed to honor you
in the great diversity of the human family.
We have desired to live in freedom,
while building walls between ourselves and others.
We have longed to be known and accepted for who we are,
while making judgements of others based on the color of skin,
or the shape of features, or the varieties of human experience.
We have tried to love our neighbors individually
while yet benefitting from systems that hold
those same neighbors in oppression.
Forgive us, Holy God.
Give us eyes to see you as you are revealed in all people.
Strengthen us for the work of reconciliation rooted in love.
Restore us in your image, to be beloved community,
united in our diversity,
even as you are one with Christ and the Spirit,

When the townspeople rose early in the morning, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the sacred pole beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built. So they said to one another, ‘Who has done this?’ After searching and inquiring, they were told, ‘Gideon son of Joash did it.’ Then the townspeople said to Joash, ‘Bring out your son, so that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the sacred pole beside it.’ But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, ‘Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down.’ Therefore on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, ‘Let Baal contend against him’, because he pulled down his altar.

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. But the spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. He also sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them.

Then Gideon said to God, ‘In order to see whether you will deliver Israel by my hand, as you have said, I am going to lay a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will deliver Israel by my hand, as you have said.’ And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. John 1:1-18

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

We commemorate today three musicians who made immense and enduring contributions to the worship of God and formal liturgy. They were persons of great faith who put their talents at God’s service.

— Johann Sebastian Bach was a life-long church musician in German Lutheran parishes. His many compositions for liturgical use include “St. John Passion,” “St. Matthew Passion,” the “B Minor Mass,” and cantatas based on Scripture. In hymnody, Bach harmonized the settings of “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” and “O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded” as found in the Episcopal hymnal. Bach customarily signed his works “S D G,” the initial letters of the Latin phrase, “Soli Deo Gloria” – for the glory of God alone.
— George Frederich (Georg Friedrich) Handel, a German-English musician, is best known for his “Messiah” and its “Hallelujah Chorus” and also composed dozens of other works based on Biblical texts. The Christmas carol “Joy to the World” is set to music by Handel, as is the hymn “Rejoice, the Lord is King.” Handel is interred in Westminster Abbey.
— Henry Purcell was organist of both Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal and composed dozens of anthems and sacred songs. The hymn “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation” is set to one of Purcell’s works. He, too, is buried in Westminster Abbey, alongside the organ.

Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to

William Reed Huntington
1838 – July 27, 1909

William Reed Huntington never became a bishop, but was one of the most influential parish priests of his generation. From his ordination to his death he participated in the House of Deputies at 13 General Conventions. He moved that the Order of Deaconesses be restored in 1871, and when that was authorized in 1889, his parish became a center for training.
He was an outspoken proponent of and active participant in revising the Book of Common Prayer, which was completed in 1892. He wrote numerous prayers including the Collect for Friday we use here each week.

Almighty God, whose dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

William Reed Huntington wrote a book titled The Church Idea in which he outlined four basic points of Chirstian unity which came to be known as the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral. His ideas were formulated into a statement which was adopted by the House of Bishops and later by the Bishops of the Anglican Communion as a starting point for discussing union with other Christian groups. The four points are: Scripture, Creeds, Sacraments, and Ministry.

Judges 2:1-5, 11-23

Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you into the land that I had promised to your ancestors. I said, “I will never break my covenant with you. For your part, do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; tear down their altars.” But you have not obeyed my command. See what you have done! So now I say, I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become adversaries to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’ When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept. Then the Lord raised up judges, who delivered them out of the power of those who plundered them. Yet they did not listen even to their judges; for they lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their ancestors had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord; they did not follow their example.

Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who persecuted and oppressed them. But whenever the judge died, they would relapse and behave worse than their ancestors, following other gods, worshipping them and bowing down to them. They would not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said, ‘Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors, and have not obeyed my voice, I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died.’ In order to test Israel, whether or not they would take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their ancestors did, the Lord had left those nations, not driving them out at once, and had not handed them over to Joshua.
