Let us confess our sins to God.

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

O Holy One, thank you for coming to us anew this day.
Prepare our hearts and reawaken our love for you as we discern your call within us.

Amos 5:18-24

Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord!
   Why do you want the day of the Lord?
It is darkness, not light;

Commemoration: St. Nicholas of Myra

About St. Nicholas: Nicholas (d. AD 342) is known historically to have been a Bishop in the city of Myra in Lycia (part of modern Turkey) in the fourth century. He is associated with charitable giving in many countries around the world and is portrayed as the rescuer of sailors, the protector of children, and the friend of people in distress or need. Stories of St. Nicholas place him as a benefactor, as well as a stauch advocate of the Christian faith, which placed him in prison. Some accounts also place him at the Council of Nicea, heatedly advocating against Arius (and perhaps slapping him!). As a benefactor to those in need (especially children) and a defender of the Christian faith, St. Nicholas continues to be remembered and celebrated on his feast day around the world.

Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep,
we have followed too much the devices and desires of our

Daily Morning Prayer for Friday, December 1

Commemoration: Nicholas Ferrar, Deacon

Englishman Nicholas Ferrar (1592-1637) came from a wealthy family that was associated with the Virginia Company and had a Royal Charter for a plantation in the colony. Ferrar attended Cambridge, traveled to continental Europe, and served as a member of Parliament as a young man. In 1626 he was ordained a deacon and moved to the town of Little Gidding, where his family, friends, and servants constituted an informal religious community. Under Ferrar’s direction, they faithfully prayed the Daily Office, recited the entire Psalter daily, and always had a member situated at prayer. The group lived its faith by restoring and reviving the local church; writing about Christian faith and practice; and pursuing voluntary poverty, almsgiving, and social welfare projects. Ferrar was a friend of Anglican priest and poet George Herbert and hosted King Charles I at Little Gidding several times. Today, members of the Society of St. Nicholas Ferrar in the United States emulate his devotion to the Daily Office by committing to daily Morning and Evening Prayer and promoting the practice. T.S. Eliot’s poem “Little Gidding” further commemorates Ferrar’s experience and community: “You are not here to verify, / Instruct yourself, or inform curiosity / Or carry report. You are here to kneel / Where prayer has been valid.”

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of
the Lord.” Psalm 122:1

Creator, we give you thanks for all you are and all you bring to us for our visit within your creation. Commemoration of Herman of Alaska, Missionary

1756 – 1837

Herman of Alaska was a Russian Orthodox monk and missionary to Alaska, which was then part of Russian America. His gentle approach and ascetic life earned him the love and respect of both the native Alaskans and the Russian colonists. He is considered by many Orthodox Christians to be the patron saint of North America.

The Russian colonization of the Americas began when Vitus Bering and Aleksei Chirikov discovered Alaska in 1741. The expedition harvested 1,500 sea otter pelts and sold them to Chinese merchants for large amounts of money. This spurred a “fur rush” from 1741 to 1798. Several Russian fur traders established the Russian-American Company on Kodiak Island, building a school and converting many natives to orthodox Christianity, but they also subjugated the native peoples and were very abusive.

When members of the RAC petitioned Catherine the Great for a priest, she decided to send 10 monks instead, including Herman.The missionaries arrived on Kodiak on September 24, 1794. Herman and the other missionaries encountered a harsh reality at Kodiak. The men were forced to hunt for sea otter even during harsh weather, and women and children were abused. The monks were also shocked at the widespread alcoholism in the Russian population, and the fact that most of the settlers had taken native mistresses. The monks themselves were not given the supplies that they had been promised, and had to till the ground with wooden implements.^[19]

The monks became the defenders of the native Kodiak population. Herman was especially noted for his zeal in protecting them from the excessive demands of the RAC, for which he was disparaged by the Russian fur traders. A contemporary historian compared him to Bartolomé de las Casas, the Roman Catholic friar who defended the rights of native South Americans against the Spanish colonists.^[22]

After over a decade spent in Alaska, Herman became the head of the mission in 1807, although he was not ordained to the priesthood. The local population loved and respected him, and he had established good relations with Russian leadership. Herman ran the mission school, where he taught church subjects such as singing and catechism, alongside reading and writing. He also taught agriculture on Spruce Island, where he retired from active duty, but continued to care for native peoples and lead worship.

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
