F. D. Maurice studied civil law at Cambridge but refused the degree in 1827 because he didn’t want to declare himself an Anglican. In 1834, however, he converted and was then ordained a priest. He was concerned with social issues and the church’s response and organized the Christian Socialist Movement, whose purpose, according to Maurice was to “commit us at once to the conflict we must engage in sooner or later with the unsocial Christians and unchristian Socialists.” He worked as Professor of English Literature and History at King’s College, London, and in 1846, Professor of Theology. In 1854, he founded the Working Men’s College, and became its first head. He was professor of Moral Theology at Cambridge from 1866 until his death.

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. O Lord and Ruler of the hosts of heaven, *

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
