Commemoration of Junia, Andronicus and Lydia

Junia and Andronicus (Greek: Ιουνια) were 1st-century Christians who were highly regarded by the apostle Paul in Romans 16:7 (NRSV): “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives who were in prison with me; they are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.”
Eastern Orthodox traditions say Junia and Andronicus traveled extensively and preached the Gospel to pagans, many of whom were converted to Christianity and eventually martyred. Paul refers to them as relatives but it is unclear how they may have been related to him as well as each other. Some think they were siblings, others a married couple.
Lydia of Thyatira (Greek: Λυδία) was a wealthy woman living in Rome who gave great hospitality to Paul and other Christians in Philippi. She is known as the first European convert to Christianity and is referenced in the Bible in Acts 16:13-15.
In celebrating these early Christians, we recognize the extensive contributions of women throughout the early church, contributions which were widely acknowledged without objection during the first 1200 years of the church.

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Eternal God, who gives good gifts to all people and who grants the spirit of generosity: Give us, we pray you, hearts that are always open to hear your word, that, following the example of your servant Lydia, we may show hospitality to all who are in any need or trouble, through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty and restore all things in glory through the victory of Jesus Christ. We pray that, wherever your image is still disfigured by poverty, sickness, selfishness, war and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ may appear in justice, love, and peace, to the glory of your name. Amen.
A Prayer of St. Chrysostom:
Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
