Saint Lucy, Santa Lucia
Virgin and Martyr, 304
Little is known about Lucy except that she was listed in early Roman documents and Roman liturgy as an exemplary martyr. Her name means “light” which may have something to do with the legend that her eyes were taken, but her sight miraculously returned. In Sweden and elsewhere the day is observed by having a young girl dress in white with a crown of lighted candles on her head go from room to room in the house, singing carols early in the morning before sunrise. She offers them special St. Lucy’s Cakes and coffee. She does this to remember the legend that Lucy brought food to Christians hiding in the Roman catacombs, with only the light of a candlelit wreath on her head to guide the way.
