Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is considered the first great Latin American poet, one of the first feminist literary women in the Americas, and even during her lifetime she had the reputation of being the premiere Baroque poet in New Spain (Mexico). She was a prolific writer of poetry, essays, dramas, and music, and her extraordinary talent earned her many followers as well as many misogynistic attacks. In fact, she was greatly persecuted for being an intellectual woman who was outspoken about the mistreatment and unfair treatment of women. Judith said,
Begin a song to my God with tambourines,

Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you; *

The Apostles’ Creed

Through Jesus Christ who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
