Commemoration: Elisabeth Cruciger (1500-1535)

Elisabeth Cruciger was the first female poet and hymn writer of the Protestant Reformation. Her hymn, “The Only Son from Heaven” was included in the first evangelical hymnal which was published in 1524.  The text combines Lutheran teaching with medieval mysticism. It has been the basis of musical settings such as Bach’s chorale cantata Herr Christ, der einge Gottessohn, BWV 96.

For centuries scholars argued that she could not have written the hymn because only a theologically trained man could have written such profound words, They said that she was credited only because she and her husband were friends of Martin Luther.

Born in 1500 she was sent to live in a convent at an early age and took religious vows at the age of 15. She lived a life of study, service, and prayer. While serving as a nun, Elisabeth encountered a young preacher named Johannes Bugenhagen who preached for reforms in the church and joined the movement of young Martin Luther by 1520 and the following year Elisabeth renounced her vows and moved to Wittenburg with the Bugenhagen family to be a part of the reformation movement. She was one of many former nuns who showed up in Wittenburg and in fact she was friends with Katharina von Bora, a former nun who became Luther’s wife. Elisabeth married a student of Luther’s, Casper Cruciger and the four of them would discuss and debate Scripture. She died at the age of 35.
