I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Lord, open our lips.

Isaiah 42:1-17

Here is my servant, whom I uphold,

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, ‘Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?’ Jesus said to them, ‘The wedding-guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

‘No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.’

Let us confess our sins to God.

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love
and serve only your will. Amen.

Commemoration of Julia Chester Emery

(September 24, 1852 – January 9, 1922)

Julia Emery became National Secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Board of Missions in 1876 and served for 40 years, during which she visited every diocese in the United States to encourage support for missions. She traveled to several Asian countries so that she could report directly to Episcopalian women about the work being done, and accompanied the Bishop of New York to London as a delegate to the Pan-Anglican Congress and the Lambeth Conference in 1908. Emery also founded the United Thank Offering (UTO). Each woman was given a small box with a slit in the top and encouraged to drop a small contribution into it whenever she felt thankful for something. Once a year, the women of the parish presented these at a Sunday service and the money was sent to national headquarters to be used for missions. The UTO continues to encourage all people to collect offerings of thanks in small blue boxes, and uses the money, over $1 million annually, to support missions throughout the Anglican communion.

Commemoration for Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821)

Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York and grew up in the Church of England turned Episcopal church. She and her husband attended Trinity Wall Street where she became a charter member of The Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children. When her father-in-law died, she and her husband took in 6 of her husband’s siblings in addition to their own 5. She converted to Catholicism during an extended stay in Italy following the death of her husband and returned to the United States where she was confirmed in the Catholic church and started an academy for girls. But when the parents found out she had converted to Catholicism they withdrew their daughters. She was about to move to Canada with her children when she met a visiting priest who convinced her to move to Emmitsburg, MD where they were establishing the first Catholic Seminary in the U.S,, Mt. St. Mary’s. She established the St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School, which was actually the beginning of Catholica parochial schools in the U.S. Her religious community there adopted the rules of life of the Daughters of Charity in 1811, which was cofounded in France by Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac, but it wasn’t until after her death that they became the first official branch in the U.S. of the Sisters of Charity, the first American religious society. She died at only 46 years of age. She was the first person born in the U.S. to be canonized a saint in the Catholic Church.
